Circulation Clerk

Royal Center – Boone Township Public Library is accepting resumes for a part-time Circulation Clerk. This position will assist customers in the circulation and location of materials and provide information in a friendly and welcoming manner, and keep materials organized on shelves according to library procedures. Library experience preferred.

Interested applicants must be a high school graduate (or equivalent), have basic computer skills, able to learn quickly, and be detail oriented.  This is a front line position that would interact with the public at the circulation desk. Good communication skills and pleasant demeanor also required. Duties include (but are not limited to): Check out, and discharge library materials, make and modify library cards, answer basic directional questions, assist with collection maintenance, and other duties as assigned. Hourly pay is $8.00/hour.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to)

  • Efficient and comfortable using a computer
  • Check library materials in and out.
  • Searches collection for overdue and missing materials.
  • Answers the telephone; answers questions appropriate to skill level; relays messages to appropriate individuals.
  • Assists patrons in placing holds.
  • Performs holds management – including hold list and hold shelf maintenance.
  • Assists patrons with routine location questions – referring patrons to other staff members as needed; assists patrons to look up materials on the computer and instructs patrons in the use of the library equipment.
  • Collects fines and provides appropriate change.
  • Operates standard library equipment such as copiers, and online computer system.
  • Inspects returned items for damage.
  • Registers new patrons and updates existing patron accounts.
  • Shelves all library materials.
  • Shelf-reads, weeds, and shifts materials as needed.
  • Performs various opening and closing procedures.
  • Assist with basic housekeeping duties in the library.


This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer knowledge and/or prior experience in the following areas: library work, customer service; filing; organization (arrangement); resolving customer complaints, and working on a team.

September 2015 Programming

  • “Be Heart Smart” program being offered through Purdue/Cass County Extension. There will be 4 meetings for this program.

  • Meetings will take place downstairs in the library at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays. Registration is preferred as seating is limited to the first 10 respondents.
  • Coffee Time Tuesdays – join us each Tuesday morning at 10:30 to visit with old friends and make new ones.
  • Book Club Tuesday, 9/15 at 10:30 a.m. – meetings take place on the 3rd Tuesday of each month during Coffee Time hour. This month we are reading “The End of the Affair by Graham Greene. Stop by the library to pick up your copy of the book. (supplies are limited).
  • LEGO Club – Join us each Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and play with our LEGO collection. Meet new friends for this fun and creative playtime. Children under the age of 6 must have a parent accompany them for this activity.
  • Make It! Take It! Join us on Thursdays in September at 4:00 p.m. for a craft project appropriate for kids ages 4– 11 years old. Children under the age of 6 must have a parent accompany them. This month we will meet on September 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th.
  • Learn to download eBooks to your device – Through the month of September, we will offer an 12:30 p.m. session on Tuesday and Thursday and a 5:30 p.m. session on Wednesday and Friday.

Royal Center Library has gone digital

Royal Center Library has expanded its services with eBooks, digital audiobooks, magazines, and streaming video. The link is available from the library’s website by clicking on the OverDrive download icon on the front page of the website. Boone Township resident library card holders can borrow popular digital media anytime, anywhere.

Users may browse the OverDrive website, and with a valid library card, borrow titles and start reading, listening or watching on all major computers and devices, including iPhone®, iPad®, Nook®, Android™ phones and tablets, and Kindle® [U.S. Libraries]. Many titles can be enjoyed immediately on any device with an internet browser or downloaded into the free OverDrive app. All titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees!

The library board and staff are very excited to offer this resource to our local patrons. We feel the easy access will help raise our library circulation numbers and allow more people to take advantage of the hundreds of wonderful titles that are available through the library and the OverDrive app. The library will be offering free “how to” sessions each day through the month of August; On Tues. and Thurs. at 11:30 a.m. and on Wed. and Fri. at 5:30 p.m. for anyone who would like more information about using their digital devices to borrow library materials.

This new service, powered by OverDrive, is free for Boone Township residents with a library account in good standing.
